³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ holds Campus Safety Day

KENNESAW, Ga. | Oct 4, 2018

Event set for Oct. 9 on Kennesaw Campus Green

Kennesaw State’s annual Campus Safety Day will be held on the Campus Green from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Oct. 9. Free flu shots for students, a fire set in a mock dorm room and a visit with the K9s from the ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ Police and Cobb County Sheriff Department highlight the day’s activities.

In addition to ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ student nurses giving free flu shots to their fellow students, the ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ Student Health Services Flu Clinic will also be dispensing advice on how to avoid and/or lessen the effects of the influenza virus this year.

Students will also have the opportunity to learn about ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥â€™s Public Safety Rape Aggression Defense course that is offered to students several times each year.

At approximately 1:15 p.m., a mock dorm room, constructed near the main entrance to the Carmichael Student Center, will be set on fire with a lighted candle to demonstrate how rapidly a room can be engulfed by flames. A highlight of each year’s Campus Safety Day, the exercise comes during National Fire Prevention Week.

Cobb County firefighters will extinguish the blaze, and students will also have an opportunity to practice their own fire-fighting skills with a fire extinguisher on a smaller fire. ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ has more than 5,000 residence hall students on both campuses, and all housing units are equipped with sprinklers and fire extinguishers.

Throughout the day, K9s and their handlers from the ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ Police and the Cobb County Sheriff Department will educate students about the special training these dogs undergo to help apprehend suspects and protect law enforcement personnel as they encounter dangerous situations.

Several other activities are planned, including tours of the ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ Police Mobile Command Vehicle, the ³ÉÈËÖ±²¥ Critical Incident Response Trailer, the City of Marietta Police armored rescue vehicle and Cobb County fire trucks. Cobb County’s Bomb Truck will be on site, along with a demonstration of the robots used to safely handle explosive devices. Representatives from the American Red Cross will offer advice about what to do in crisis and emergency management situations. The FBI and members of the Cobb and Douglas County Public Health will also distribute information.
